Olivier Giroud returns to Losc Lille in a sensational transfer

Olivier Giroud has officially completed his return to French football, signing with LOSC Lille on July 1, 2025, marking his comeback to Ligue 1 thirteen years after winning the title with Montpellier HSC in 2012 .

The transfer process began in late June 2025. LAFC agreed to terminate Giroud’s contract on June 27, 2025, paving the way for his move to Lille . Giroud underwent a medical test in Paris ahead of completing his move to Lille OSC , with the process moving swiftly from negotiations to completion.

Contract Details

Giroud signed a one-year contract with Lille that runs until June 30, 2026, with an option to extend for a further year  . The 38-year-old striker joined as a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with LAFC.

Giroud’s time at LAFC was challenging, as he managed only five goals in 38 appearances, 5 goals, 3 assists across all competitions after joining in May 2024 . Despite receiving a standing ovation on his farewell night, Giroud struggled to find form in his final appearance.

Giroud admitted he wasn’t initially expecting to return to Europe when he left AC Milan for LAFC last summer. However, the opportunity to return to French football proved appealing, with the striker expressing his excitement about joining Lille.

This transfer shows a lovely homecoming for Giroud, who has not played in his native domestic league since 2012 . At 38 years old, he brings vast international experience to Lille, having been France’s all-time leading scorer before retiring from international football after Euro 2024.

The move allows Giroud to finish his career in familiar surroundings while providing Lille with an experienced striker as they continue building their squad for the upcoming season.
