Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp could be the next Germany coach. This is according to Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, whose rumors have in many cases been accurate. In the X tweet, the Italian sports journalist seems certain that the German tactician will take the helm.
Klopp is the most potent manager to take over the role that has been left vacant after Julian Nagelsmann was shown the door by the German FA (DFB).
Germany has lately become an underdog in competitive tournaments, including the ugly elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were bungled out in the Round of 32 by an unlikely side, Paraguay. Just like in the previous 2018 and 2022 tournaments, they showed no character at all, and overall, they put up a lacklustre performance. It’s worth noting that they have not gone past the Round of 32 ever since winning the 2014 tournament.
Is Jurgen Klopp Germany’s Answer?
Upon dissecting Germany’s woes, it is clear that the problem is the technical bench and not a lack of quality players. After the departure of Joachim Löw, Die Mannschaft has never found a worthy replacement and has resorted to sacking coaches, something they are not known for.
They tried Hansi Flick, it didn’t work, then came Nagelsmann, and still nothing worked. Both men are of the same caliber and were more of short-term solutions and some sort of gambles that haven’t paid off. At Liverpool, he transformed the Reds, who were only Champions League hopefuls, into a Premier League powerhouse and European champions, winning 8 major trophies, including the Premier League (2019-20), UEFA Champions League (2018-19), and FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Jurgen Klopp to Germany? Breaking Down the Chances
For now, this remains a rumor, but the chances are very high that the ex-Liverpool tactician will be joining.
After his Liverpool exit, Klopp said he wanted some time from the daily responsibilities of football, but he never stayed down for long. In 2025, he was back in the dugouts, taking up a role as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer. It’s important to note that this role doesn’t tie him down, as there is a break clause allowing him to leave for the Germany job.
Getting a call-up for the German national team and the pride that comes with it is not a small feat, so chances are high that if he’s given the job, he will gladly take it. This is, if at all, a German FA (DFB) statement released, is anything to go by. The statement read that the DFB “will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp”, and added that “He has already signaled his general willingness to take on the position.”
