It is emerging that Virgil van Dijk could be leaving Anfield, a place he has called home for close to a decade. The Dutch defender has been pivotal in Liverpool’s success for the last few years, but in football, as we have seen before, no one is indispensable, and modern-day football is about planning for tomorrow rather than holding on to yesterday.
According to TEAMtalk, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is not considering Van Dijk ‘untouchable’ anymore, a status he held a few years ago when Liverpool were at the helm. They would be ready to listen to any offers for a move, and interestingly, there is a lot of interest in the defender from far and wide.
But why would the Reds consider selling their captain, despite his legendary status?
Liverpool’s Squad Needs Freshening Up
You will agree with me that Liverpool’s performances of late are wanting and the team has never been the same since Jürgen Klopp’s departure. They lost their spark and have tried everything, including changing managers, but nothing seems to work.
With the club’s recruitment strategy that has long been anchored in staying ahead of decline rather than reacting to it, they will be considering releasing the old players and going for fresh talent.
Virgil van Dijk will be turning 35 in a few days, so of course there is physical decline. Considering today’s football requires aggressive pressing, quick defensive recoveries, and high-intensity transitions, Liverpool is keen on a succession process.

Virgil Van Dijk is among the top earners at Liverpool after renewing his contract in 2025. It’s reported that the Dutch international rakes in £350,000/week plus performance-related bonuses totalling £400k/week.
With Liverpool’s recent dismal performances, this is a serious concern. To make matters worse, he still has a year left on his contract, so releasing him this summer would be a financial relief for FSG.
Where Could Virgil van Dijk Go Next?
So far, Liverpool have not placed Van Dijk on the market, and neither the club nor the player has hinted at leaving, but the transfer market is already active. The Netherlands captain is attracting interest from several clubs from across the world.
Leading the race for the towering centre-back is AC Milan. Reports coming in suggest that Ruben Amorim is considering him to solve Milan’s defensive problems. It is said that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is actively pushing for this deal as well.
There is also massive interest coming from Turkey, with Fenerbahçe also interested in the defender to pair him up with fellow Dutchman Nathan Aké who left Man City and joined the Turkish side. Galatasaray is also interested.
There is further interest from Saudi Arabia, with Al Nassr willing to go the extra mile to get him, while a move to the MLS is also possible.
Tough Decisions to Be Made
Virgil Van Dijk might be aging, but he is still a top defender that Liverpool can rely on. He is also the captain fantastic who plays a key role in the dressing room. His recent performances at the FIFA World Cup 26 were impressive despite the Netherlands being eliminated in the Round of 32. All said and done, he remains a legend at Anfield.
But all this means nothing to Liverpool and FSG’s transfer philosophy.
Time and again, FSG has shown a willingness to release even their best players if they have to. They have never allowed emotion to influence transferred decisions. From the case of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mané, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho, to Roberto Firmino, Liverpool has always remained objective, putting the club’s interest first, so Van Dijk’s case wouldn’t be different.
