In the last two days, there has been a lot of frenzy regarding the future of Arsenal star Martin Odegaard, who has been linked to a move to Turkish side Galatasaray. The story has quickly gained traction across Europe, with Arsenal sources and fans quickly coming out to question the validity of the rumor, terming it as outrageous.
Intriguingly, the report suggests that the Norwegian, who is currently enjoying his time at the World Cup, has already agreed personal terms with Galatasaray, something that makes the Gunners even more furious.
Well, here’s the thing: while nothing is impossible, it’s important to countercheck the credibility of the source before coming to any conclusion.
Where Did the Martin Odegaard Rumor Begin?
The rumor started with a tweet from one Turkish journalist, Selman Öztürk, from Galatasaray, and quickly spread to other Turkish media outlets like wildfire.
In the tweet, Öztürk says that the 27-year-old Norwegian had finalized personal terms with Galatasaray and that there were no pending issues. In his claims, he suggested that the deal was in the region of €40M and Galatasaray were open to offering more if Arsenal were to consider a long-term payment plan. He even went further to claim Odegaard’s agent, Bjorn Kvarme, had flown into Istanbul for the negotiations some time last week.
So who exactly is Selman Öztürk?
Well, he is a little-known journalist hailing from Galatasaray, and while he has a considerable following on X and Instagram, there are no credible records of his earlier speculations about transfers. Today, he has also posted that Galatasaray are finalizing a big-money move for Jhon Duran.
Galatasaray Jhon Duran transferini “komik” rakamlara bitiriyor. Oyuncunun kabul ettiği sözleşme şartlarını görünce herkesin içine sinecek transfer. Ek olarak, bu sözleşme gösteriyor ki oyuncu para için değil, oynamak için geliyor.
Even though the Martin Odegaard rumor has not been reported elsewhere, there was at least a Jhon Duran transfer rumor reported by TRT Spor, a state-owned sports television network and digital news brand in Turkey.
Arsenal Sources Pour Cold Water on Claims
Since then, Arsenal transfer sources and top publications have come out to refute the rumors, terming them baseless. Among the media houses rubbishing the claims is Goal, which labels the rumor as ‘’completely false.’’
Reliable sources also confirm that Ødegaard’s agent has not travelled to Istanbul and, in fact, he is thousands of miles across the Atlantic supporting Ødegaard in his World Cup tournament duties.
There is also the general acknowledgement in the realms of football that Martin Odegaard is happy at Arsenal, having guided his team to Premier League victory and reaching the Champions League finals. As the captain, he remains central to Arsenal’s long-term plans, and there is no indication that either side is considering a separation at the moment.

Rumor or Reality?
Well, looking at both sides, it is hard to tell whether this is a rumor or a reality.
On one side, it could be possible that something is cooking as Galatasaray have in the recent past raided some of the top clubs and are currently looking to strengthen their side, which already boasts several top players including Leroy Sane, İlkay Gündoğan and Victor Osimhen, and are linked with Virgil Van Dijk, so their ambition in the transfer market can’t be overlooked. Another twist, BBC reporter Sami Mokbel recently claimed that he heard “whispers” that Arsenal could listen to offers for Odegaard this summer.

On the other side, it sounds ridiculous for Arsenal to release their captain, though they did so with Cesc Fabregas, but that was a different scenario altogether. The €40M price tag is also worth talking about, as the figure is too modest for a relatively young midfielder who could easily fetch twice the amount. Last, the source lacks credibility, and the rumor has loopholes.
We leave it at that for now. Until either club confirms negotiations or at least we get to hear from multiple reliable sources, this Martin Odegaard story should be treated with utmost caution.
