Liverpool are interested in a potential move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven.
This comes after rumours that the 2024/25 Premier League champions are willing to let Virgil van Dijk move on after 8 and a half years of brilliant service, that helped Liverpool secure a couple of league trophies, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Club World Cup.
The Liverpool backline is set to look a lot different from what it did a few seasons ago, with Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson, and Trent Alexander-Arnold now all at new clubs, with Joel Matip retired. Robertson actually made the switch to Tottenham, and as of right now, is a club teammate of van de Ven’s.
All of the aforementioned were excellent servants for LFC, but none come close to van Dijk, who will leave a massive void behind when he finally departs the red side of Merseyside. That said, he is 35 tomorrow, and it would be unrealistic to expect him to perform consistently at the top level, with both Premier League and Champions League football to play.
This is the best time for an up-and-coming talent to get into the starting line-up, and van de Ven had demonstrated, on his day, that he has the hallmarks of an elite defender. If Liverpool do bring him to Anfield, it is highly likely they will see him as a starter, potentially even their most highly regarded centre back.
The Dutch Contingent at Liverpool
Despite Arne Slot parting ways with Liverpool, the club still has many Dutch representatives.
Having been teammates for the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup, van Dijk and van de Ven know each other well. Holland’s quest for a first a maiden World Cup was stamped out by a tenacious Morocco side, who triumphed over their opponents on penalties.
The two could soon be lining up at Liverpool, one could, or neither could, depending on how the transfer market shapes up. Even if van de Ven is to be a replacement for van Dijk, he will have familiar faces around him, with Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch also being international teammates of his.

Despite finishing 17th in consecutive Premier League season, Tottenham have demonstrated that they remain one of the biggest draws in English football with the blockbuster signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. This could be the season where they kickstart a resurgence.
Aside from winning the Europa League in 2025 (Spurs’ first trophy since the League Cup in 2008), Tottenham have struggled in recent seasons. They have fallen from a consistent Champions League contender to a relegation-battling side.
Now, with Roberto De Zerbi at the helm and with some fantastic summer signings, they look like an ambitious club again, who will be competing at the higher end of the Premier League table in the coming seasons and potentially battling for more silverware.
As such, losing arguably their best defender would be tough for them to take. Since he arrived in North London back in 2023, van de Ven has been a mainstay in the side and one of the very few rays of light in the team.
That’s why he’s now attracting interest from Liverpool, who will be looking to compete for the Premier League again after finishing fifth last time around. However, it is highly likely Spurs will demand a huge transfer fee for the Dutchman’s services. Liverpool splashed the cash last summer, and it will be interesting to see whether they adopt the same approach this year.
