Pierce Charles has returned to Manchester City, signing for the Citizens for £3 million.
This is a full circle moment for the 20-year-old goalkeeper. Hailing from Manchester, Charles showed promise during his early career in the City academy, but ultimately was one of the many who get cast aside.
In 2021, he joined Sheffield Wednesday, making 8 appearances for them in his second season as an Owl.
Last season he made a solid amount of appearances as Sheffield Wednesday were relegated to the Championship, after the impossible mission of staying in the league after being deducted 18 points.

Sheffield Wednesday are one of England’s oldest football institutions, four-time league champions and FA Cup winners, a side that once rubbed shoulders with the elite of the English game and spent long stretches in the top flight as recently as the 1990s. Hillsborough has hosted World Cup and FA Cup semi-final football, a reminder of just how significant this club once was on the English football landscape.
But mismanagement under owner Dejphon Chansiri dragged the club into administration in October, triggering a 12-point deduction, before a further 6-point penalty for late payments to staff and HMRC pushed the total sanction to 18 points . Wednesday’s season on the pitch was similarly dire, finishing with just two wins, a record low for the Championship , and combined with the penalty, they ended with 0 points, the lowest total in English football history, winning just two games in the Championship.
They remain a huge club in England, and hopefully they can bounce back.
Pierce Charles Following a Similar Path to James Trafford?
James Trafford also came through the youth ranks as a Man City goalkeeper. He ended up impressing so much after he left at Burnley that Guardiola resigned him.
Trafford was expected to become the new first choice goalkeeper, but quickly last season the manager realised Trafford was missing something he wanted.
Donnarumma came in and Trafford’s opportunities have been limited. Despite this, he played in the FA Cup and League Cup final and kept clean sheets as City won both.
Away with England at the World Cup, Trafford could become the no. 1 in the future if he stays at City.
Charles is a long way away from being the City goalkeeper, but keepers do have longer careers than outfield players, and their investment in him shows that they see something in his talent.
Loan to Championship QPR
Charles has been loaned to QPR for more regular game time, something he is looking forward to:

Man City are now looking ahead to the 2026/27 season, keen on regaining their spot at the top of the Premier League, while also hoping for a further run in the Champions League.
