Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni Signs New Contract on 18th Birthday

Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni has officially extended his contract with the club today, coinciding with his 18th birthday. The young talent joined Liverpool from Leicester City in September 2023, and his impressive performances have earned him a new deal at the AXA Training Centre.

Last season, Nyoni showed his versatility by playing for the senior, U21, U19, and U18 teams, making six appearances at the first-team level. As an England U20 international, he made history as Liverpool’s fourth-youngest debutant, coming off the bench in an Emirates FA Cup victory over Southampton in February 2024 at just 16 years and 243 days old.

Nyoni’s standout performances for the U18 side led to his rapid inclusion in the first team, where he debuted in a 3-0 FA Cup win against Southampton, replacing Harvey Elliott. His pre-season efforts further solidified his place, resulting in five senior appearances during the 2024-25 season, including a record-setting appearance in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, making him the youngest Liverpool player ever in European competition at 17 years and 213 days.

Born on June 30, 2007, in Leicester to Zimbabwean parents, Nyoni joined the Leicester City Academy at a young age. He caught Liverpool’s attention while playing for the Foxes’ Under-18 team, where he scored twice in 13 appearances during the 2022-2023 season. A fee for his transfer was set by a tribunal, as the two clubs could not agree.

Nyoni’s debut for the first team came after being included on the bench for a Premier League 2 game and later being called up for a match against Brentford in November 2023. His talent on the field, his balance, skill, and football intelligence has drawn comparisons to renowned players like Paul Pogba.
